The most magic happens when we get out of our own way and get out of our comfort zone.

The minute I think I know everything and am the expert enough to stop seeking and learning, I am have secured by sexy butt in a comfort zone deep enough I won’t get out any time soon. Worse, off, I’m in so deep no one can see me or help me!
Love your points about knowing that ‘edge behaviour’ when I hit the limits of my comfort zone and steps to navigate through it to bigger and better things. Great post!

Sometimes when a client is asking for something outside of my comfort zone, I just remember to breathe, take notes as I listen and not form my answers. And if I need it, I tell them I need to think about how I can accommodate their request and get back to them. Nobody has EVER pushed me to decide on the spot.

Don’t forget the power of stepping outside your zone in just ONE area of your life as well. I went rappelling. Slowly. Down a HUGE cliff face (like 50+ feet high). That one triumph had me going in ALL areas of my life for weeks! If I could do THAT, of COURSE I could do this!

I can look back and see that I am moving though, so that’s good. You are so right about the sense of accomplishment we feel when we do something we didn’t think we could do! I can relate to “breaking things down” as I’ve looked at something and felt total overwhelm but once broken down and completed, it really wasn’t that bad!

They are so warm and cosy, and so inviting. No wonder you end up getting a bit sleepy in them, where its safe, warm and familiar. Then one day you wanna burst out! And that is when you do have to be a bit measured, and prepare as much you can.

But therein lies the next challenge. Some of us (and by that I mean Moi) can go a little overboard in the preparation stage – basically it boils down to self-sabotaging fear and procrastination (though because we are so busy we don’t recognise that). It has taken me years to spot how regularly I fall into this trap! So there is a flip side. Be prepared, yes. Be professional, yes. But set yourself some reasonable limits or you might never get into action . And then endless planning for change becomes your new comfort zone.

Just my two cents worth, everyone is different of course! Thanks for the blog though, so useful to be reminded of these patterns and have some practical tips on how to break through!

Then someone points out a quote and I look at it like, I wrote that?

Yes, you absolutely got it. Everyone has their own limits. One person’s limits may not be even a blip on our own radar, but to them, it’s pretty scary stuff.

The moment I read about Upper Limits, so much started making sense. It was as though someone flipped a switch and I could observe these behaviors and mindsets from the role of spectator rather than participant.

Try it some time. Next time you’re feeling stressed about a situation, take a step back and ask yourself why. Keep asking that question until you get to the root. You’ll be surprised at what you find.

Just recognize the limit and figure out what it is. Your advice to do a little research before responding is great, too! Thank you!
