The exercise equipment has so much dust on it you could write out your entire exercise plan. If you remembered it.
Mount Washmore has swallowed all your clean clothes.
And yet, at the end of the week…you scratch your head wondering what the heck you’ve gotten done.
It’s an example of The Spinning Wheel of Perception playing tricks 0n your mind.
Perception is a cagey creature. Elusive and slippery, it spins the truth into an experiential distortion, one based on our rules, beliefs, memories, mood, hormones, and sensory receptors.
What you perceive to be truth from an experience will not necessarily be what I get out of it. In fact, ask two or more people witnessing an event what the details are, and you are likely to get two or more different stories.
Understanding how these Spinning Wheels play into your role as a Creative Business Owner is one of the most important keys to a consistently growing, vibrant business.
How do you combat the shifty, ever-changing perceptions that can keep you off balance—and un-clear—where you REALLY are in your life and business?
How do you know what’s REALLY going on? How do you learn to trust your instincts when your day to day perceptions feel like ever changing sand?
Measure, measure, measure.
What you measure, you will know, what you know, will grow.
It sounds like magic, but it isn’t. It is a simple cause and effect of focus.
I have something to admit. I have a natural aversion to numbers. I am an artist after all. Just like most of our clients, we are much more comfortable in the land of the abstract and creative visions. However, one of the dangers of our creativity is that we can get stuck in awfulising and grandiosing when neither are based in fact. When either of those two monsters start taking up imaginary space inside out heads, the spinning wheel begins to spin. We tell ourselves stories that simply aren’t true.
“I’ll never make any money at this, I better double down and burn the candle at both ends.”
“We haven’t made a single dime all year. I’m wasting my time at this. I don’t even know what I got done this month. I better work extra hard this weekend to make up for it.”
“This is a piece of cake, no worries, I’ve got time….The clients will come….from somewhere. I’m sure of it. After all, I made an intention. Somewhere on some vision board. It’s around here somewhere….”
Either one of these foggy, cloudy strategies opens the door to Spinning Wheel perceptions that can wake us up in the middle of the night when reality has an uncanny knack for wanting to fill in the facts. ( What is UP WITH THAT anyhow????)
However, when we take the time to measure the details, record our numbers, pay attention to what we accomplished and ground our businesses in day -to-day, week-to-week performances, then perception takes a back seat to reality and fact.
The cold hard FUN facts.
If you spent forty hours at the office and you can see measurable results, if you can see how your time spent was efficient and profitable, then the Spinning Wheel that tells you you must keep going, going, going because the work is never, never, never done has proof to stop it from spinning. The Spinning Wheel comes to an end.
It might not seem like the funnest strategy at the time, and it might require building a new habit to learn to record and measure but once you get the hang of it, you may discover that you actually enjoy your business a whole lot more. It might actually get to be fun to watch the facts of how your business is growing instead of the guessing game of perception.
Who knows. You might even get a better night’s sleep too.
