Sirius Sunday: Rose's Nose is the Enemy of Happiness

Written by Guest Writer - April 18, 2010 3 Comments

My nose has been itching for the past five days.

No joke. And I don’t mean the kind of itch that goes away with a delicate swipe of the back of the hand or that fades when you stretch the muscles in your cheeks. If only.

No, I’m talking about the kind of itch that burns, the kind that makes you wonder if there isn’t some kind of infinitesimally tiny populations of sentient beings living in your nostrils and out to convince their host that they are worthy of better treatment. I work at a library, and I have to bite my tongue to keep from screaming because I. Can’t. Stop. Scratching.

I’ve given up on trying to be cool. No more casual scratching for me; when the nose declares itself unhappy I start rubbing. Mashing, actually. I clench my fist and grind my face like my nose is an insect and I an exterminator. I haven’t tried knives or broken glass as scratching implements, but it’s no doubt only a matter of time.

My Theory

Okay, so I’ve heard that when your nose itches, it means that people are talking about you. So it’s a good thing, right? Because it means I’m popular and (judging by the frequency of the itching) a household name. Then again, I’ve also heard that an itching nose means you’re soon going to kiss a fool.

I’m going to plead the fifth on explaining why that one isn’t likely.

And then there’s the tale that an itching nose means people are coming over soon. That’d be okay, except that my nose itches most when I’m at the public library, where everyone can see me abusing my face and decide that I’m insane and a terrible hostess.

Then there’s the one that says that an itchy nose means that someone will soon get into a fight with you.

At this point, I’m not all that opposed to the option of having someone else punch me in the face before I hit myself. At least the pain would be better than this insufferable itching!

In Less “Irritated” News . . . (Ha ha, did you get it?)

Through rain or shine, itching or calm, the Sirius team keeps churning out the good stuff. If there were things in your life that distracted you from reading this week’s Sirius articles, take a moment on this lovely day and get yourself caught up, because there’s never a Sirius article that you won’t be sorry to have missed.

Deb outdid herself—we got two posts from our lead designer this week! On Monday we continued the conversation about self-publishing and got to talk about America’s Next Top Model (it was relevant! Don’t ask me how she came up with it, though). The question of credibility and what self-publishing does to a would-be author, asked with Deb-esque style and the Sirius preference for straight-up, no-nonsense candor.

On Wednesday Deb shared her latest big idea (and if you don’t know anything else about Deb, know this—she has a lot of big ideas that usually end up being pretty darn good) about specialized Twitter apps. Read it, and then check out the comments that came in from some of your fellow readers. Hilarious, but somehow almost dangerously genius . . .

Thursday brought us another glorious foray into the world of HTML from Allison. This week we learned about navigation, an especially special treat given that the writer penned this little exploration while on vacation. In Japan! Who loves Sirius? (Allison does!)

Must…Not…Scratch…

Now, if you really want, you can believe that having an itchy nose just means that I’m a victim of allergies, but I prefer to leave such shabby explanations to those without the imagination to hope for better.

And here at Sirius, we’re all about imagining better—and then turning those hopes into realities.

Oh, friends, I often suffer. I suffer from constant itching, yes, but I suffer more from wondering if you lovely readers are doing all you can to reach your enormous potential. The comments we get and the conversations we have tell us that the Sirius readers are a group of fabulously talented individuals. Don’t let that go to waste! The Sirius Team is here to make sure that your dreams become reality. Do it today! Start something awesome and see where your dreams can take you.

And let even the itchiest members of the team come along for the ride.

@Rose: Your posts always make me laugh and since I read them ahead of time I usually have to wait on the edge of my seat to comment. And at 2am last night this line had me falling out of the chair:

@Deb: Dude, I sometimes sit there after reading one of your posts and try to figure out how you made the connections you did, and I stop when my brain wants to cry. You’re like a little kid with ADHD, only it’s your BRAIN jumping around…
